Riot X seeks actors and writers to join our ensemble!
These auditions will happen over Zoom.
Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 6 PM
Riot X is an experimental theater ensemble, housed, pre-Covid, at Roslindale Square's Riot Theater. We are rooted in the aesthetics and structure of the Neo-Futurists and their show "The Infinite Wrench," previously known as "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind."
The Neo-Futurists create non-illusory theatre: there is no suspension of disbelief. They do not play characters; the setting is where they are; the time is the present; there is no attempt to convince the audience that the players are anyone other than themselves in any other time or place, feeling any emotions other than what is true for the actor in the moment. You can read more here: https://neofuturists.org/.
Since April, Riot X has gone virtual with our monthly live show. Now our "Live-ish" Zoom shows air on the last Saturday of every month, and they comprise of 30 original plays each, either pre-recorded or performed live, presented in an unpredictable order determined by the audience that night. These plays are short, generally ~2 minutes in length ("The Infinite Wrench" caps strictly at 60 minutes) and are based in truth and the actors' personal experiences. The plays are at times funny, deep, goofy, raw, abstract, profound -- or just a fart joke. They can be physical, movement-based, still, text-based, completely silent, take place in the dark, etc...
We work collaboratively and rehearse over Zoom on Thursday nights from 6-8 PM and would intend to return at least partially to live performances when safety allows. For the immediate future, we are seeking new ensemble members who are located anywhere that allows you to attend these online meetings and shows.
Riot X is looking to grow as a company that is diverse and inclusive, welcoming people of any race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, age, size, and ability to audition. Experience writing and performing (music, theatre, comedy, anything) can be helpful, but is not a prerequisite. Being comfortable presenting content that may at times expose vulnerability is a must.
For the audition, you will be asked to perform live or present recorded a 2-minute piece of your own original devising that reflects who you are, how you express yourself, and how you interact with the world. The solo performance will likely be followed by a group workshop.
To sign up for auditions please email Joe Gels at joe@theriottheater.com. Be prepared to submit a printed copy of your script, if applicable, alongside a headshot/picture of yourself and resume/CV. Once you sign up, we will also send you a recording of one of our previous Live-ish shows for you to view to become familiar with this unique form.
We look forward to meeting you! Check out some of our plays. Theriottheater.com/riotx
